DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and that you got some of what you wanted. Now we get to look for a Safe and Happy New Year.  Our communications group will be operating a Free Coffee Safety Break again over the New Year’s holiday. We will have our trailer at the Northbound Rest Area of I-77, just South of Mineral Wells.  If you happen to be going North on I-77 Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, stop by and say hello to whoever is working.

I got a message from Chuck Dotson, WB8NSL, about the Wood County NODE of WOODWV.  He said that when he connected to it, the station seemed to keep sending out something that kept information running up the screen.  While I was at the Safety Break on Saturday I noticed that when I was trying to operate Packet, and connected to the station that my screen went blank.  I think there is still something wrong with the WOODWV TNC.  During the Region 5 Hospital exercise December 17th, several of the operators used the WOODWV NODE, and didn't have any trouble until the end of the exercise.  Everyone going through WOODWV got knocked out of the system.  None of us were able to get connected back into the NODE, and it seemed to be locked up.  The NODE just kept sending out information like it was trying to re-connect to one of the other TNCs.  The station kept sending the same thing over and over.  Ken Riffle, KB8QPW, was finally able to get connected into the backdoor of the NODE and give it a RESET.  Back in April I noticed the NODE was having a problem, and thought it was off the air.  I wrote about the problem a couple of weeks ago in the News. It looks like the best thing to do is go to the hilltop and change out the TNC. We can't have the acting up when we may need it.  As soon as we get the Safety Break over, I'll get with Duane Jones, N8LDM, who has access to the tower site, and change out the TNC.

There were 62 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net.  Roy Humes, N8RH, who's been participating in the net since April 2, 1994, has completed 650 check-ins, and will be receiving his certificate.  Gladys Gorrell, KC8GIZ, needs only one more check-in to make 650.  There was one new participant to the net this week, and that was Shaun Neidlinger, KB3CXQ, from Aurora, Preston County.  I want to welcome Shaun to the DAREN system and hope he can participate in the net as often as possible.
