DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.
Not much news this week and I'm late getting out what I do have. Myself and three other members of Wood County Emergency Communications spent most of the day last Thursday installing telephones in different locations at the West Virginia University at Parkersburg. We hung about 1200 feet of telephone wire from the suspended ceiling. In places where the telephones were going to take additional wire, or was going to be hard to get through doors, cordless telephones were placed as close as possible. The telephones were part of the communications system that would be used on Friday and Saturday with the Mission of Mercy free Dental Clinic. On Friday and Saturday several members of the group were at WVU-P from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm coordinating the communications for the event. The group also loaned out 12 UHF Walkie/Talkies to most of the officials and the ambulance squad so they could communicate with each other and could be reached when problems arose. Base stations were also set up to communicate with the Red Cross and the E-911 Center. The clinic provided service to about 800 patients each day. The patients needed anything from a simple tooth filled, to up to 24 teeth being pulled and fitted for dentures.
I talked to Joe Forren, ND4B, about the Greenbrier County NODE/PBBS of GREEWV/FAIRWV. Joe knew the station was off the air and was hoping to have it back in operation within the next week or so.
There were 56 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Charles King, KB8YIT, needs only one more check-in to make 400. Jim Woodford, KC8MLK, needs only one more check-in to make 250. I got all of the certificates printed up and mailed out for those who have been waiting for their certificates. If you have been waiting for a certificate, and you haven't got it by now, send me a message to let me know.
